EDITORS COMMENTS
The Surrey Theatre, (c1878). This print captures the grandeur of The Surrey Theatre, a historic landmark in Blackfriars Road, London. Originally known as the Royal Circus and Equestrian Philharmonic Academy in 1782, this iconic theatre faced multiple devastating fires in 1799,1805, and 1865. However, it rose from its ashes each time with renewed splendor. The image showcases three significant moments in the history of The Surrey Theatre. Firstly, we see the Old Theatre as it stood after its reconstruction in 1865. Its elegant architectural design is a testament to Victorian craftsmanship and attention to detail. Secondly, we are given a glimpse into the interior of the New Theatre that opened on December 26th of that same year. The auditorium exudes an air of opulence with its ornate decor and seating arrangement. Lastly, we witness the ruins of the Old Theatre following yet another tragic fire. Despite being reduced to rubble once again, these remnants serve as a reminder of both resilience and loss. This photograph is part of 'Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History', written by Edward Walford in collaboration with William Henry Prior's stunning illustrations capturing various locations across England's capital city during the nineteenth century. Through this remarkable visual documentation by an unknown creator preserved by The Print Collector archives at Heritage Images Ltd. , viewers can immerse themselves in London's rich theatrical heritage.
