EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: In Memory of Ensign Lyndon J. Grier (1858) - A Tribute to a Brave British Soldier in Amblecote Church This evocative photograph captures the Tablet in Amblecote Church, dedicated to the memory of Ensign Lyndon J. Grier, who lost his life during the Great Sepoy Rebellion in India in 1857. The tablet serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of this young British soldier. Ensign Lyndon J. Grier, aged just 19, was a gallant member of the 34th Regiment of Foot. He had already distinguished himself in the severe engagements of the previous days, carrying the Colours through the battles with unwavering determination. Tragically, during the attack upon the Gwalior Mutineers near Cawnpore on November 28, 1857, he was mortally wounded while leading a charge against the enemy's guns. The people of Amblecote Church, moved by the young soldier's admirable character and the devoted courage with which he faced his untimely death, chose to honor him with this tablet. The inscription reads, "In Memory of Lyndon John Grier, Aged 19 years, Ensign in H.M. 34th Regiment of Foot, who, after carrying the Colours through the severe engagements of the two previous days, fell mortally wounded, while bravely leading a charge against the Enemy's Guns, in the Attack upon the Gwalior Mutineers, near Cawnpore, on the 28th November, 1857." The tablet also serves as a tribute to the Rev. John William Grier, M.A., the first incumbent of Amblecote, who was the sorrowing father of the fallen soldier. The inscription concludes with the Biblical verse, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" (Revelation 2:10), a poignant reminder of the eternal reward that awaits those who give their lives in the service of their country. This photograph, taken from an 1858 issue of the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to pay our respects to a brave young man who gave his all for his country.
