Taking The Doctors Advice, 1863. Artist: John Tenniel
Taking The Doctors Advice, 1863. Napoleon III had long had his French fingers in a variety of different European pies. At the beginning of November 1863, he wrote to all the different sovereigns of the European powers, proposing a Conference, to assemble in Paris, to discuss the general state of Europe in an effort to establish peace. Lord John Russell declined this invitation even though it appears that Dr Punch had been advising his patient, Napoleon, to attempt arbitration for some time. Eventually, so many other invitations had been declined, that the Conference was abandoned. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 21, 1863

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print by renowned artist John Tenniel. This satirical depiction showcases the political landscape of Europe during the 19th century, specifically focusing on Napoleon III and his attempts to establish peace through a proposed Conference in Paris. In the image, we see Napoleon III sitting with a doctor who appears to be giving him advice. The French emperor is portrayed wearing his iconic top hat and sporting a distinguished moustache. His face reflects both determination and concern as he listens intently to the physician's words. The print alludes to Napoleon III's ambitious nature as he seeks to extend France's influence across various European nations. However, despite receiving counsel from Dr Punch (a representation of public opinion), Lord John Russell declines his invitation for the Conference, symbolizing diplomatic resistance. Tenniel's masterful use of caricature and satire captures not only the political tensions of that time but also highlights the complexities faced by statesmen like Napoleon III. Through this artwork, we are reminded of how politics can often be influenced by personal ambitions and conflicting interests among different sovereigns. This black-and-white engraving serves as an important historical document, shedding light on significant events in European history during the mid-19th century. It exemplifies Tenniel's talent for capturing nuanced expressions and conveying complex narratives within a single image. Overall, "Taking The Doctors Advice" offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into one moment in history when diplomacy hung delicately in balance amidst shifting alliances and power struggles between nations.
