The "Te Deum" for Peace, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Moorfields - Cardinal Wiseman preachin Creator: Unknown. The "Te Deum" for Peace, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Moorfields - Cardinal Wiseman preachin Creator: Unknown

The "Te Deum" for Peace, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Moorfields, [London] - Cardinal Wiseman preaching before the Bishops, 1856. End of the Crimean War. Cardinal Wiseman proceeded to address the congregation...He commenced by drawing a picture of the beauty of peace, and the contrast which it presented to the horrors of war. He pointed out that if we at home, thousands of miles from the theatre of war, felt the influence of peace, how would it be welcomed by those who dwelt upon the spot which had been the scene of sorrow and desolation...He believed that there was now an end for ever to the cry of Catholic disloyalty...In those graves the Protestant and the Catholic soldier lay in that long rest never to be disturbed till the last trumpet shall waken all to judgment. Both had received their mortal wounds in the same cause...the hymn "Te Deum" was sung by the choir'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Moorfields, London, during the year 1856. The image shows Cardinal Wiseman, the influential leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England, delivering a sermon to a congregation of bishops following the end of the Crimean War. The war, which had raged on from 1853 to 1856, had taken a heavy toll on Europe, leaving countless lives lost and communities devastated. Cardinal Wiseman, known for his eloquence and compassion, proceeded to address the congregation, drawing a vivid picture of the beauty of peace and the stark contrast it presented to the horrors of war. He emphasized that if the peace was felt so profoundly by those far removed from the battlefield, how much more would it be welcomed by those who had lived through the sorrow and desolation of the war-torn lands. The Cardinal expressed his belief that the end of the war marked an end to the cries of Catholic disloyalty, emphasizing that both Protestant and Catholic soldiers had given their lives in the same cause. The congregation responded by singing the hymn "Te Deum," a traditional Latin hymn of praise to God, symbolizing their unity and shared gratitude for the gift of peace. This powerful moment in history serves as a poignant reminder of the unifying power of faith and the hope that peace brings in the aftermath of conflict. The photograph, taken from the pages of the "Illustrated London News," offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to reflect on the enduring significance of unity and peace in the face of adversity.
