EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting Temple Bar, nestled in Theobalds Park near Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Originally one of the grand gates into the City of London, this architectural marvel was meticulously rebuilt by the renowned Sir Christopher Wren in 1672 following the devastating Great Fire. Intriguingly, during the late 19th century, Temple Bar was dismantled and transported to Theobalds Park under the ownership of Sir Henry Meux. However, destiny had a different plan for this historic landmark as it returned to its rightful place in London over a hundred years later. It now stands proudly as an entrance to Paternoster Square redevelopment near St Paul's Cathedral since opening its doors to the public in 2004. The monochrome image beautifully captures Temple Bar's majestic archway against a backdrop of timeless buildings and picturesque landscapes. This snapshot from "Wonderful London" edited by Arthur St John Adcock and published by Amalgamated Press between 1926-1927, transports us back to an era when architecture seamlessly blended with history. Through McLeish's artistic lens, we are reminded of Sir Christopher Wren's remarkable craftsmanship that has stood steadfast for centuries. As we gaze upon this print collector's masterpiece, we cannot help but appreciate how heritage intertwines with progress—a testament to our ability to preserve history while embracing modernity.
