EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the ancient world of Egypt, specifically to the Temple d'Ombos in Haute-Egypte. Created by Maxime du Camp in 1852, this salted paper print captures the essence of a temple that dates back to the 2nd century BC. The image showcases the grandeur and architectural beauty of this Hellenistic temple, which was dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haroeris, also known as Horus. The entrance stands tall with its intricate designs and detailed carvings that speak volumes about the craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian artists. Maxime du Camp's photography allows us to appreciate not only the physical structure but also transports us into a different era. As we gaze at this ruinous site situated on the banks of Assuan (Aswan) in Upper Egypt, we can't help but feel a sense of awe for our ancestors who built such magnificent structures. This photograph is part of Du Camp's album titled "Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie" which was published in 1852. It serves as a reminder of how art can preserve history and transport us across time and space. Thanks to Du Camp's skillful eye and dedication to his craft, we are able to witness firsthand an important piece of Middle Eastern heritage. Displayed proudly at Art Institute Chicago among other remarkable works from around the world, this print invites viewers into a journey through time – connecting past civilizations with our present-day appreciation for artistry and cultural preservation.
