The Temple of Isis at Philae, Egypt, 20th century

The Temple of Isis at Philae, Egypt, 20th century. The temple dedicated to Isis on the island of Philae was built in the Ptolemaic period. It was the last remaining outpost of the Ancient Egyptian religion when the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian closed it down in c550. After damage caused by flooding after the construction of the Aswan Dam, the temple complex was moved, piece by piece, to the nearby island of Agilkai in 1977-1980

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Temple of Isis at Philae, Egypt: A Testament to Ancient Egyptian Religion and Resilience". This print captures the majestic Temple of Isis at Philae, a remarkable testament to the ancient Egyptian religion and its enduring legacy. Built during the Ptolemaic period, this temple stood as the last stronghold of the Ancient Egyptian faith until it was forcibly closed by Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian in around 550 AD. Over time, this sacred site faced numerous challenges, including damage caused by flooding following the construction of the Aswan Dam. However, thanks to dedicated efforts between 1977 and 1980, each piece of this magnificent temple complex was carefully relocated to nearby Agilkai Island. The photograph showcases not only the architectural grandeur but also highlights how water played a significant role in transporting people and goods through canoes along the River Nile. The ruins stand as a poignant reminder of both human ingenuity and nature's power. As one gazes upon this image, they are transported back in time to an era when religious devotion shaped every aspect of life in ancient Egypt. It is a visual representation that encapsulates centuries-old history within its weathered stones. Today, visitors from around the world flock to witness these awe-inspiring ruins nestled on an island amidst flowing waters. The Temple of Isis at Philae serves as a bridge connecting us with our distant past while reminding us that even after centuries have passed since its creation – its beauty endures.
