Testimonial to Colonel Gore Browne, late Governor of New Zealand, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Testimonial to Colonel Gore Browne, late Governor of New Zealand, 1864. 'The testimonial, which is very handsome, consists of a centre epergne and two dessert stands, appropriately embellished with birds, animals, and plants proper to the country. It is of frosted silver, polished, and of finished workmanship, and has been manufactured by Messrs. Hunt and Roskell...The gallantry of our troops, aided by colonial volunteers who have shown equal bravery, and the determined and well-organised resistance of the Maori chieftains, have drawn upon our antipodes, New Zealand, the attention of the world. It is, therefore, at a seasonable period that we engrave a portion of a magnificent service of plate which has been prepared for presentation to the late Governor of New Zealand, Colonel Gore Browne...On the breaking out of the Maori war, in the last year of his government, Colonel Gore Browne showed a vigour which was denounced by some persons, but which experience has shown to be the one thing necessary. His was the vigour of a loyal English gentleman, and was essential in resisting the land league and the Maori King movement'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864
