"The First-Born", by F. Goodall, A.R.A. in the International Exhibition, 1862. Engraving of a painting. "The First-born" is distinguished for its splendour and intensity of colour and tone and its breadth and completeness of effect...A gentleman who was with the artist at the time tells us that the swarthy model was a Copt woman from the "Christian" or "Copt quarter" of Cairo, and that the fine type and form of these women are not exaggerated. She wears the usual long veil and black habbarah of the Cairene women. The taste for hanging the earrings and dress with Venetian sequins and other gold coins is shown here, even the cap of the infant being thus decorated...our lady-readers know the fashion has lately been adopted by European ladies. The coffee-table, curiously inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl, is short, to suit the low divans and the recumbent position assumed when taking refreshments. Through the perforations of the metal vessel on the table the smoke of burning perfume is escaping, exemplifying the common local custom of scenting apartments'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The First-Born," a captivating painting by the renowned British artist Frederick Goodall, A.R.A., was showcased in the International Exhibition of 1862. This masterpiece, skillfully engraved by E. Skill, is renowned for its vibrant and rich color palette, as well as its broad and comprehensive effect. The painting depicts a Coptic woman from the Christian quarter of Cairo, cradling her dark-skinned firstborn infant. The model's swarthy features and elegant form are authentically portrayed, and the artist's attention to detail is evident in the traditional attire of the woman. She wears the long veil and black habbarah, which are characteristic of Cairene women, and her earrings, dress, and even the cap of the infant are adorned with Venetian sequins and gold coins. The setting of the painting is equally intriguing, with a low coffee table inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl, which is a common feature in Middle Eastern homes. The coffee table is short, reflecting the local custom of taking refreshments while in a recumbent position. The smoke escaping through the perforations of the metal vessel on the table signifies the local custom of scenting apartments with burning perfume. The painting's authentic portrayal of Middle Eastern culture and its intricate details were a source of fascination for European audiences at the time, and the fashionable European ladies had adopted the custom of hanging earrings and dressing their infants with gold coins, as seen in this painting. The First-Born remains a testament to Goodall's artistic prowess and his ability to capture the essence of a culture far removed from his own.
