"The Launch" - painted by G. Smith, 1854. This spirited little affair represents an amusing episode in schoolboy life. Amongst a group of urchins playing with toy-boats, is one more adventurous than the rest, who is about starting upon a voyage of discovery in a washing-tub. One of his companions is engaged pushing off the frail bark with a long pole; and they all mightily enjoy the nervous alarm betrayed in the features of the young sailor, who evidently begins to have some misgivings as to the result of the day's proceedings. The surrounding landscape, and the figures introduced in the distance, are well conceived; and the whole is painted in a free and effective style. This picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in the season 1853]. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Launch" painted by G. Smith in 1854 is a charming depiction of an exciting moment in the life of a group of mischievous schoolboys. The painting captures the essence of childhood adventure as one boy prepares to embark on a voyage in a makeshift washing-tub boat. His companions eagerly push him off with a long pole, while the young sailor expresses a mixture of excitement and trepidation on his face. The surrounding landscape is beautifully rendered, with figures in the distance adding depth and context to the scene. This delightful painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853 and was later published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. The image captures the spirit of 19th century rural life, with the boys dressed in typical Victorian apparel, including aprons and black and white clothing. The painting is executed in a free and effective style, with a sense of energy and movement that brings the scene to life. The image is reminiscent of the kitsch and regionalism popular during the Victorian era, and is a wonderful representation of the simple pleasures and joys of childhood. The boys' playful behavior on the riverbank is a timeless reminder of the importance of imagination and adventure in our lives. This print is a treasure from the past, offering a glimpse into the world of 19th century Britain and the everyday experiences of its people. It is a must-have for any collection of historical art or for those interested in the social history of the Victorian era.
