"The Separation of the Apostles" - from a picture by Charles Gleyre, 1858. The subject of this picture is the figurative separation of the Apostles at the foot of the Cross, when they went forth into all lands preaching the gospel. M. Gleyre, the artist, has shown considerable skill and taste in the composition, the result being a highly-effective and striking group, well calculated to enforce the sentiment intended, namely, the importance of the apostolic mission as based upon, and springing from, the cross. For the rest, as in the attitudes, the disposition of the draperies, and the studied simplicity of the landscape, the treatment is peculiarly French, and the picture may be taken as a fair average specimen of the modern French scriptural school. Our Engraving is copied, by permission, from a fine print, after the picture, by Gautin, published by Messrs. Gambard and Co.'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

The Separation of the A apostles

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating painting by the renowned Swiss artist Charles Gleyre, created in 1858. This masterpiece portrays a significant moment in Christian history, when the Apostles, at the foot of the Cross, were called to separate and spread the gospel to all corners of the world. Gleyre's composition skillfully conveys the emotional depth and importance of this pivotal event. The Apostles, depicted with solemn and determined expressions, are shown in various poses, each one preparing to embark on their individual missions. The artist's use of light and shadow, as well as the intricate folds of their robes, adds a sense of drama and realism to the scene. The painting's French influence is evident in its treatment of the figures and the landscape. The attitudes, draperies, and simple yet evocative background all reflect the contemporary French scriptural school. The result is a powerful and moving work of art that effectively conveys the significance of the apostolic mission and its connection to the Cross. This description is based on an article from the "Illustrated London News" published in 1858, which provides an insightful analysis of the painting and its artistic merits. The article notes the picture's impact and its ability to evoke the intended sentiment, making it a noteworthy example of the modern French scriptural school. Our image is a reproduction of the original painting, expertly captured by the skilled engraver Gautin and published by Gambart & Co. The print, which serves as the basis for this description, offers a faithful representation of the painting's intricate details and emotional resonance.
