"The Water-Cart" - painted by Troyon - from the London Exhibition of the French School of Fine Arts, 1856. Engraving of a painting. M. Troyon received in 1838 the third-classs medal for landscape; in 1840 the second-class medal; and in 1846 and 1848 the first-class medal. He has thus worked his way assiduously and deservedly to distinction. In 1849 he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour; and only last year he received, with the approbation of his countrymen, the first-class medal at the Universal Exhibition. As yet M. Troyon is too little known in this country...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

The Water-Cart
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating painting by the renowned French artist Constant Troyon, showcased at the London Exhibition of the French School of Fine Arts in 1856. The engraving of this masterpiece, created by W. Thomas, transports us back to a simpler time in rural France. Troyon's dedication to his craft is evident in his meteoric rise through the ranks of the French art world. He earned the third-class medal for landscape in 1838, followed by the second-class medal in 1840. In 1846 and 1848, he achieved the prestigious first-class medal. In 1849, Troyon was honored with the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Last year, he received the first-class medal at the Universal Exhibition, further solidifying his reputation. Despite his impressive accomplishments, Troyon remains relatively unknown in Britain. The painting depicts a bullock cart, laden with a large water tank, making its way through the countryside. The oxen, with their powerful forms, pull the cart along the winding road, stopping at a river to drink. The scene is a testament to the importance of water supply in rural areas, and the essential role of oxen in transportation. The black and white image, reminiscent of the 19th century, evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. The painting's regionalism and focus on rural life are characteristic of Troyon's work, which often celebrated the beauty and simplicity of the French countryside. This engraving is a valuable addition to any art collection, offering a glimpse into the past and the artistic vision of a master painter.
