Thebes, The Colossi of Memnon, 1870s. Creator: Henri Bechard (French)

Thebes, The Colossi of Memnon, 1870s. As more photographers shot the same monuments, depictions became formulaic.Numerous photographers produced almost identical images, as demonstrated in these two views of the Colossi of Memnon. Shot from different sides but about the same distance, both images employ an angled view and use Egyptian servants and guides as local colour and indexes of scale. Captions and artists signatures were often written in reverse on the negatives so that they would automatically become part of each print. Sometimes, as in the Beato image, the artist or his assistant was care less

Thebes, The Colossi of Memnon - A Glimpse into Formulaic Depictions in the 1870s

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the iconic Colossi of Memnon in Thebes during the 1870s. Created by Henri Bechard, a French photographer, this image sheds light on an interesting phenomenon that occurred as more photographers flocked to capture these ancient monuments. As photography gained popularity, numerous photographers sought to immortalize these colossal statues and inadvertently created almost identical images. This print showcases two views of the Colossi of Memnon from different sides but at approximately the same distance. Both photographs employ an angled perspective and incorporate Egyptian servants and guides to add local color and provide a sense of scale. Intriguingly, captions and artists' signatures were often written in reverse on negatives so that they would automatically become part of each print. However, it seems that Bechard or his assistant may have been somewhat careless with their execution, as evidenced by slight imperfections present in this particular image. This 19th-century albumen print from a wet collodion negative is now housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art. It serves as a testament to both the artistic skill involved in early photography techniques and how certain subjects could unintentionally lead to formulaic depictions when captured by multiple photographers. Through this photograph's lens, we are transported back in time to witness not only the grandeur of Thebes but also how photographic practices evolved during this
