EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, former US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) is seen visiting the National Museum in Washington, D.C. between 1914 and 1917. The museum, which would later be renamed the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, holds Roosevelt's East African flora and fauna specimens collected during the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition of 1909-10. The expedition, led by Roosevelt and Dr. William H. Hornaday, resulted in the collection of around 11,400 animal specimens. It took Smithsonian naturalists eight years to catalog these precious finds. Roosevelt, dressed in a suit and hat, is seen standing among taxidermied wildlife displays, surrounded by museum staff and officials. He is flanked by Martha Kuntze, Martha Ewing Newcombe, and George W. Harris of Harris & Ewing Photographic Studio. The occasion may have been an opening ceremony or a private tour of the museum. Roosevelt's association with the museum and its natural history collections was significant. His controversial big game hunting expeditions and conservation efforts had brought him international fame, and his collections were a valuable addition to the museum's holdings. The photograph captures a moment of pride and accomplishment for Roosevelt as he stands amidst the fruits of his explorations. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a prominent photographic studio in Washington, D.C. at the time. The studio, which was founded by George W. Harris and his wife Martha Ewing Harris in 1896, was known for its high-quality glass negatives and its ability to capture important historical moments. This photograph is a testament to their skill and the historical significance of the event it documents.
