At the Battle of Big Bethel he volunteered for General Ebenezer Pierces staff and drew up a crude plan of battle. Winthrop leaped onto the trunk of a fallen tree and yelled, One more charge boys, and the day is ours. Soon thereafter he was killed by a musket ball to the heart and became the premier casualty for the northern side in what history regards as the first pitched land battle of the American Civil War. Engraving from A Childs History of the United States by John Gilmary Shea, published by Hess and McDavitt, (New York, 1872)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Major Theodore Winthrop, an American soldier who tragically lost his life during the American Civil War. The artist, John A O'Neill, beautifully captures the essence of this brave and determined man. With a stern expression on his face and a well-groomed mustache adorning his upper lip, Winthrop's portrait exudes strength and resilience. The engraving originates from "A Child's History of the United States" by John Gilmary Shea, published in 1872. It depicts Major Winthrop as he valiantly led an ill-fated assault on the Confederate left flank at the Battle of Big Bethel in 1861. Standing atop a fallen tree trunk, he rallied his fellow soldiers with unwavering determination: "One more charge boys, and the day is ours". Tragically, Winthrop's heroic efforts were cut short when he was struck by a musket ball to the heart. His untimely death marked him as one of the premier casualties for the Union side in what history recognizes as one of the first pitched land battles of the American Civil War. This black-and-white engraving transports us back to that tumultuous time in American history. It serves as a poignant reminder of those who sacrificed their lives for their country and symbolizes both courage and patriotism. Through this powerful image, we honor Major Theodore Winthrop's memory and pay tribute to all those who fought bravely during this defining chapter in our nation's past.
