Thomas Mayhew and the Narragansett sachem, 17th century (c1880)
Thomas Mayhew and the Narragansett sachem, 17th century (c1880). Thomas Mayhew (1593-1682) was part of the so-called Great Migration that saw 20, 000 Puritan settlers arrive in Massachusetts from England in the 1630s. In 1642, together with his son, Thomas Jr, he established the first settlement at Marthas Vineyard. Both Mayhews took trouble to foster good relations with the Native American tribes of the area, including the Narragansetts, and Thomas Jr worked tirelessly to bring Christianity to them. After the younger Mayhew was lost at sea on a journey to England in 1657, his father took on the mantle of his missionary work, despite being sixty years old. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in American history, depicting Thomas Mayhew and the Narragansett sachem during the 17th century. Thomas Mayhew, an English settler who arrived in Massachusetts as part of the Great Migration, played a crucial role in establishing the first settlement at Martha's Vineyard alongside his son, Thomas Jr. The Mayhews were known for their efforts to build positive relationships with Native American tribes, including the Narragansetts. Thomas Jr. , especially dedicated himself to bringing Christianity to these indigenous communities. Tragically, he was lost at sea on a journey to England in 1657. Undeterred by age or personal loss, his father took up his missionary work despite being sixty years old. This image showcases cultural exchange between two worlds: an Englishman dressed in colonial attire engaging with a Native American leader adorned in traditional clothing and headdress. The teepee behind them symbolizes both native culture and their meeting place. Printed from Cassell's History of the United States by Edmund Ollier around 1880, this engraving serves as a reminder of early colonists' attempts at religious conversion and peaceful coexistence amidst colonialism. It highlights not only individual figures like Thomas Mayhew but also broader themes such as Puritan migration, Protestantism's influence on colonization efforts, and interactions between settlers and indigenous peoples. As we reflect upon this historical moment frozen in time through this photograph print by Unknown (creator), Edmund Ollier;Thomas Mayhew;Thomas Mayhew Jr;, it reminds us of America's complex past while urging us to appreciate diverse cultures that have shaped our nation today.
