"Tired Sheep - Glen Spean, Scotland", by R. Ansdell, from the exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1862. Engraving of a painting. The sky has the stillness and calmness of eventide, the sun has just sunk below the horizon, the moor and Spean "water", or river, are in quiet shadow, but his rays still linger on the scarped slopes of the distant hills, the flock of birds - packs of ptarmigan maybe - is circling its way to the roost up among the snowy granite ledges, the shepherd consoles himself with his evening pipe and the near prospect of home - for such we presume to be the cabin just seen on the right... and where, a little to the left, a part of the flock is already collected; the sagacious dogs, too, seem to be aware of the fact, for they appear to be pricking their ears and drawing up for a moment to listen for a familiar sound. Man, pony, dogs, sheep, all seem weary. The hardy Galloway looks back a little resentfully at the additional burden'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

Tired Sheep - Glen Spean, Scotland, by R. Ansdell

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating painting by Robert Ansdell, showcased at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1862. This engraving by W. Thomas brings the scene to life, transporting us to the tranquil beauty of the Scottish Highlands. The sun has set, casting a stillness and calmness over the landscape. The sky is a canvas of soft, muted hues, reflecting the quietness of the evening. The moor and Spean water, or river, are in quiet shadow, while the sun's rays linger on the scarped slopes of the distant hills. A flock of birds, possibly ptarmigan, circles above, making their way to their roost among the snowy granite ledges. The shepherd, weary from the day's work, consoles himself with his evening pipe and the near prospect of home. A cabin is visible on the right, and a part of the flock is already gathered nearby. The hardy Galloway cattle, burdened with the responsibility of leading the sheep to their pen, looks back resentfully at the additional burden. Man, pony, dogs, and sheep all seem weary, mirroring the end of the day's labor. The sagacious dogs, too, appear to be aware of the situation, pricking their ears and drawing up to listen for a familiar sound. This enchanting scene captures the essence of rural life in Scotland, with its simple pleasures and the beauty of nature. The painting invites us to pause and appreciate the quiet moments of life, as the day gives way to the night.
