The town and cathedral of Monreale, in Sicily, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The town and cathedral of Monreale, in Sicily, 1862. The road from Palermo ascends all the way, concluding at last in zigzags, and the ever-changing views it commands are all that the most luxuriant fancy can desire, comprising the bay, the city, and the plain, covered with orange-trees and the richest vegetation, and the noble chain of mountains that surrounds the Conca d Oro, as the plain is called...But although the scenery around is so picturesque and beautiful, Monreale chiefly gains its notoriety from the cathedral, which, in fact, may be said to have given birth to the town. It is related that William the second King of Sicily was one day hunting...when, overcome with fatigue, he threw himself to rest beneath a tree, when he fell asleep and dreamed that the Virgin appeared to him and requested or commanded him to build her a church on the spot...Her wish - he being of a pious, obedient disposition - was obeyed, and the result was the most magnificent church in the island of Sicily. A monastery was also attached, and from the position of the buildings and their Royal founder, they received the name of "Monreale; or, the Royal Mount"...the town and cathedral occupy the centre of the Engraving'. Monreale, Sicily, 1862: A Vision of Sicilian Grandeur and Devotion This evocative image transports us back in time to the charming town of Monreale, nestled in the Conca d'Oro plain of Sicily. The scene unfolds as the eye follows the winding road that ascends from Palermo, revealing a breathtaking panorama of the bay, the city, and the lush vegetation below, all framed by the majestic mountains that encircle the plain. But Monreale's true claim to fame lies not in its picturesque surroundings alone, for it is the town's awe-inspiring cathedral that has captured the imagination of travelers and pilgrims for centuries. According to legend, the cathedral's origins can be traced back to a divine vision experienced by William II, the King of Sicily, during a hunting excursion. Overcome by fatigue, the king is said to have fallen asleep beneath a tree, only to be awakened by an apparition of the Virgin Mary. In obedience to her command, the king ordered the construction of a church on the spot, and thus, Monreale's most magnificent edifice was born. The cathedral, with its intricately decorated mosaics and soaring arches, is a testament to the piety and grandeur of the Sicilian people and their monarch. A monastery was also established, and together, the buildings came to be known as Monreale, or the 'Royal Mount.' This engraving, captured in 1862 by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to marvel at the beauty and history of this enchanting Sicilian town.
