The town and fortress of Peterwarden, on the Danube - from a drawing by S. Read, 1860. Creator: M. Jackson
The town and fortress of Peterwarden, on the Danube - from a drawing by S. Read, 1860. Peterwardein, or Petervara, the principal and frontier fortress of Austrian Slavonia, the Gibraltar of Hungary, is situated...in the neighbourhood of some mountains and fruitful lulls, on the right bank of the Danube, near the angle formed by the sudden change in the course of that river from due south to east. On a rock isolated on three sides stands the upper fortress and the hornwork; on the northern foot of the rock lies the lower fortress, which includes what is properly the town, and is partly on a gentle slope. It commands the Danube, whose waters bathe the walls on the west and south sides. It is a place of extraordinary strength both by nature and art...The fortress is capable of containing a garrison of 10, 000 men...It derives its name from Peter the Hermit, who here marshalled the soldiers of the first Crusade. In 1716 the Austrians, under Prince Eugene, here defeated the Turks, who then lost their last footing in Central Europe'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
"The town and fortress of Peterwarden, on the Danube, as depicted in this 1860 drawing by S. Read, is a formidable and historic fortification located in the Austrian region of Slavonia, Hungary. Nestled at the bend in the Danube River where it shifts from a southern to an easterly course, the fortress stands proudly on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by mountains and fertile hills. The upper fortress and hornwork, perched atop the rock, offer a breathtaking view of the Danube and the surrounding landscape. The lower fortress, which houses the town, lies at the foot of the rock and is partially situated on a gentle slope. The fortress, a natural and artistic stronghold, is capable of accommodating a garrison of 10,000 men and has a rich history. It takes its name from Peter the Hermit, who rallied the soldiers of the first Crusade at this site. In 1716, the Austrians, under the command of Prince Eugene, successfully defended the fortress against the Turks, marking the last Turkish footing in Central Europe. The fortress of Peterwarden, also known as Petervara, is a testament to the region's rich history and the resilience of its people." This drawing, created by S. Read in 1860 and captured by M. Jackson for the "Illustrated London News," offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur and importance of this historic fortress on the Danube. The image invites us to imagine the events that unfolded within its walls and the impact it had on European history.
