Trades demonstration at Florence against the temporal power of the Pope, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Trades demonstration at Florence against the temporal power of the Pope, 1862.
Engraving from a sketch by M. Mariani. [View of]...a demonstration in answer to the last declaration of Cardinal Antonelli, maintaining...that "Italy is not hostile to the temporal power of the Pope."...Each group of artisans was preceded by the banner of its corporation ornamented with laurel-leaves, and enlivened respectively by a variety of placards...such as "Viva Roma libera, capitale d'ltalia!" "Abbasso il Papa Re!" (Down with the Pope-King!) "Viva l'ltalia una!" &c. At intervals came bands of music playing national airs...when the procession reached the Palazzo Vecchio, cheers were given for the Prefect and for the National Guard, who were drawn up under arms and ready to suppress any attempt at disorder; but the demonstration passed off with the utmost urbanity...The crowd...was enthusiastic in cheering the persons taking an active part in this manifestation, comprising, in fact, persons of all classes of Florentine society...Our Artist made his Sketch as the procession reached the Piazza della Signoria, so interesting for the number of historical monuments that surround it...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this engraving from 1862, a sea of passionate Florentine artisans fill the streets, united in their opposition to the temporal power of the Pope. The demonstration, sparked by Cardinal Antonelli's recent declaration that Italy was not hostile to the Pope's temporal rule, saw each group of tradespeople proudly bearing the banner of their corporation, adorned with laurel leaves and emblazoned with defiant slogans such as "Viva Roma libera, capitale d'Italia!" (Long live free Rome, capital of Italy!) and "Abbasso il Papa Re!" (Down with the Pope-King!). As the procession made its way through the historic streets of Florence, the air was filled with the lively strains of national airs played by bands of music. The crowd, a diverse representation of Florentine society, was enthusiastic in their cheers for the Prefect and the National Guard, who stood ready to maintain order. Our Unknown artist skillfully captured the scene as the procession reached the Piazza della Signoria, a square renowned for its rich historical monuments. The determination and resolve of the demonstrators were palpable, as they marched in unison towards the heart of the city, their voices echoing through the streets in a powerful call for Italian unity and freedom from papal rule. This poignant moment in Florentine history serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Italian people and their unwavering commitment to the pursuit of self-determination and sovereignty.
