EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, created in the 16th century, showcases two distinct yet interconnected works on one sheet. On the recto, or front side, is the powerful and enigmatic image of "The Triumph of Time." In this masterful composition, Time is depicted as a bearded man riding in a chariot, surrounded by personifications of the four seasons and various symbols of the passage of time. The circular form of the chariot and the dynamic interplay of light and shadow create a sense of motion and energy. On the verso, or back side, is a delicate and expressive sketch of a stag, executed in pen and brown ink over traces of black chalk on cream laid paper. The intricately detailed rendering of the stag's fur, muscles, and expressions conveys a deep understanding of the animal's anatomy and spirit. The creator of these works is unknown, but they are attributed to Dirck Vellert (c. 1500-1569), a prominent Netherlandish artist of the Renaissance period. This rare and intriguing print is a testament to Vellert's versatility and skill, as well as the rich artistic heritage of the era. The print is currently housed in the Prints and Drawings Department of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors. With its intricate details, thought-provoking themes, and beautiful execution, this print is a must-see for anyone interested in the art of the Renaissance or the natural world.
