EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable trophy awarded to the talented golfer Ethel Funches in 1968. The creator of this exquisite piece remains unknown, but its significance is undeniable. As an African-American golfer, Funches achieved great success by winning the United Golf Association's "Amateur Women Championship Flight" that year. The trophy itself is a magnificent representation of achievement and excellence. Crafted from metal, it has been skillfully painted to resemble gold, exuding an aura of prestige and grandeur. Resting on top of a dark brown wooden square base measuring 5 inches, which sits atop a sturdy 3/4-inch thick flat wooden base, this trophy commands attention and admiration. Its design follows the classic style of a gold cup with intricate details that add depth and texture. The circular base features an elegantly textured edge while the column gracefully tapers towards the top before culminating in a sphere-like shape. This photograph not only captures the physical beauty of this historic artifact but also symbolizes resilience and triumph within African-American history. It serves as a testament to Ethel Funches' exceptional golfing skills and her significant contribution to breaking barriers in sports during the turbulent times of racial inequality in America. Displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this cherished object stands as both an emblematic reminder of our country's progress towards inclusivity and recognition for those who have paved the way for future generations.
