EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious trophy awarded to the Texas Southern University Debate Team in 1967. Crafted by A. C. Rehberger Company, this remarkable piece of heritage art reflects the rich history and cultural significance of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in America. The trophy stands tall on a dark brown plastic base adorned with intricate metal shapes that serve as decorative accents. At its pinnacle, a magnificent female statuette with wings holds a laurel wreath above her head, symbolizing victory and achievement. The five staggered levels of varying shapes taper off to form a podium where the elegant metal figurine proudly stands. A metal plaque positioned below the statuette bears an inscription honoring Baylor Forensic/Jr Women/Oratory/67, representing the specific category for which this accolade was earned. In front of this plaque rests a small metal eagle figure, exuding strength and patriotism. Metal stars adorn both sides of the eagle, further emphasizing excellence and distinction. Notably hollow at its base, this extraordinary trophy carries a manufacturer's mark from A. C. Rehberger Co. , Trophies & Awards based in Chicago, Illinois. This artifact not only represents academic prowess but also serves as a testament to African American achievements within higher education during an era marked by racial inequality. Preserved within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this photograph immortalizes an emblematic moment in time when Texas Southern University triumphed through intellectual discourse and debate competitions against esteemed institutions like Baylor University. It is a powerful reminder of how HBCUs have played an instrumental role in shaping our nation's educational landscape while celebrating African American excellence throughout history.
