Trumpet owned by Louis Armstrong, 1946. Creators: Henri Selmer Paris

This 1946 Henri Selmer B-flat custom-made and inscribed trumpet belonged to Louis Armstrong. Armstrong had been playing an earlier version of a Selmer trumpet since 1932. Even though he believed you could play a trumpet for a long time, he had the habit of playing his trumpets for approximately five years before he passed it on as a gift to a friend or colleague. In February 1946, Armstrongs manager and close friend, Joe Glaser, wrote to Selmer Instrument Company and asked for a new trumpet custom-made for Armstrongs use. Selmer agreed and presented him with this inscribed Selmer B-flat trumpet. This personally inscribed trumpet was made only for Armstrong and was not mass produced

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic trumpet owned by the legendary Louis Armstrong in 1946. Crafted by Henri Selmer Paris, this custom-made B-flat trumpet holds immense historical significance in the world of jazz and African American heritage. Louis Armstrong had been a loyal user of Selmer trumpets since 1932, firmly believing in their exceptional quality and sound. However, he had a unique habit of playing his trumpets for around five years before passing them on as gifts to friends or colleagues. In February 1946, Armstrong's manager and close friend Joe Glaser reached out to Selmer Instrument Company requesting a new trumpet specifically tailored for Armstrong's use. Selmer agreed wholeheartedly and presented him with this personally inscribed B-flat trumpet that was exclusively made for Louis Armstrong himself; it was not mass-produced like other models. The inscription on the instrument adds an extra layer of personalization and authenticity to its already remarkable history. Now housed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this extraordinary artifact symbolizes both artistic excellence and cultural heritage. Its presence serves as a testament to Louis Armstrong's unparalleled contributions to music while also highlighting the craftsmanship of Henri Selmer Paris Vincent Bach Corporation. Through this photograph, we are given a glimpse into the rich tapestry of American history where artistry meets innovation, leaving an indelible mark on generations to come.
