Udungui trade route, between Udunga and Gujirka.
, end of 19th century.
From a collection of 71 items (photographs and negatives on glass) made in the late 19th century and early 20th century by the famous revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin (1851-1937) and by N. Petrov. Charushin began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878. The collection illustrates aspects of Transbaikal history in this period, with a particular emphasis on the tea trade with China, which at that time was one of the main branches of the economy of the region. The photographs show various technological processes of growing and preparing tea, sections of trade routes, as well as views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages of Transbaikal, as well as images of local people of different ethnicities and nationalities. Several of the photographs, including one of the large and imposing Russian consulate, were taken in Urga, at that time the capital of Outer Mongolia (and known today as Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Nikolai Apollonovich Charushin at the end of the 19th century, depicts a section of the Udungui trade route between Udunga and Gujirka. At this time, the tea trade with China was a significant economic force in the Transbaikal region. Charushin, a revolutionary-populist and social and political activist, captured this image as part of a collection of 71 photographs and negatives he made during this period. The Udungui trade route was a vital artery for the exchange of goods between Russia and China. The photograph shows a caravan of horses and carts laden with tea, making their way along the rugged terrain. The route was not an easy one, with harsh weather conditions and treacherous terrain posing constant challenges to the traders. Charushin's collection provides a unique insight into the history of Transbaikal during this period. The photographs illustrate various aspects of the tea trade, from the growing and preparing of the tea leaves to the transportation of the tea along the trade routes. The images also offer glimpses of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages in the Transbaikal region. Several of the photographs, including this one, were taken in Urga, which was the capital of Outer Mongolia at that time. The imposing Russian consulate can be seen in the background, a reminder of the political and economic influence Russia held in the region. Charushin's photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era, providing valuable insights into the history and culture of Transbaikal during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
