EDITORS COMMENTS
(An Interesting Family), 1916: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph, titled "Une famille interessante" (An Interesting Family), was published in the French magazine "L'Illustration" in 1916. The image showcases an intriguing family, whose size may not be among the largest in France but boasts an engaging history. The following narrative unfolds based on a letter kindly shared by M. Charbonnier, the sub-prefect of Senlis. The Billorce family, with their three jumbo-sized babies, who brought the count of children to ten, is depicted in this photograph. The image captures the family in a cozy setting, likely in their humble home, surrounded by simple yet warm decor. The father, a sturdy man with a serious expression, stands proudly in the center, his arms wrapped around his wife. She, a petite woman with a gentle smile, cradles the youngest of their triplets in her arms, while the other two infants sit on a chair between them. The older children, dressed in their Sunday best, are arranged around their parents, their curious gazes fixed on the camera. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a simpler time, a time when families grew large, and life's joys and challenges were shared communally. The Billorce family's story is a testament to the enduring spirit of the human condition, a spirit that continues to resonate with us today. As we gaze upon their image, we are transported back in time, offering us a glimpse into the lives of a family that, despite the passage of years, remains interesting.
