EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century oil on canvas painting, titled "View of Olinda, Brazil," was created by the Dutch artist Frans Post between 1662 and 1664, decades after his return from Brazil. The work showcases the picturesque town of Olinda in the Pernambuco region of northeastern Brazil. In the 1630s, the Dutch, enticed by the lucrative sugar plantations, successfully captured much of Portugal's colony on South America's western coast. However, they were eventually forced to withdraw in the 1650s. Post traveled to Brazil from 1636 to 1644, where he sketched and painted the country and its inhabitants. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he continued to create realistic and imaginary Brazilian landscapes, showcasing the exotic fruits, animals, and architecture that he encountered during his travels. This particular painting depicts a lively and vibrant scene of Olinda, with its colorful buildings, bustling marketplace, and verdant plantation in the background. The figures in the painting, dressed in traditional Dutch and Brazilian attire, go about their daily activities, adding a sense of authenticity to the work. The use of rich colors and intricate details are characteristic of the Baroque era, making this painting a valuable addition to the artistic heritage of both the Netherlands and Brazil. Today, this masterpiece by Frans Post is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a testament to the enduring fascination with the colonial past and the cultural exchange between Europe and the Americas during the Dutch Golden Age.
