EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century engraving depicts a dramatic scene of a ship struck by lightning at sea. The title, translated from French, reveals that this was the Vessel Admiral of the Escadre Verte, a French squadron, which encountered a violent storm on the St. Lawrence River. The bolt of lightning, a brilliant flash of color against the stormy sky, fell upon the ship, consuming it in flames. In the chaos of the storm, only two foreign women were able to survive. They are shown in the image, clinging to each other and bravely jumping into the sea to reach the nearby rocky point for safety. The intricate details of the engraving, from the clouds and waves to the posture of the women, bring the story to life and transport us back to this pivotal moment in maritime history. The image, an etching after a drawing by an officer of the Escadre, is a testament to the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit.
