The Viking attack on Paris, 885 (1882-1884)

The Viking attack on Paris, 885 (1882-1884). The Vikings rowed up the Seine to attack Paris on several occasions in the 9th century, the first being in 845. The largest raid came in 885 and resulted in a siege that lasted almost a year. The city, commanded by Odo, Count of Paris, held out and in October 886 an army commanded by the King of the Franks and Roman Emperor Charles the Fat arrived and bought peace with the Vikings. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume I, F Roy editor, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic Viking attack on Paris in 885, a significant event that unfolded during the 9th century. The Vikings, known for their seafaring prowess, rowed up the mighty Seine River to besiege the city multiple times. However, it was this particular raid that proved to be their most formidable challenge. The image showcases the towering city walls of Paris as they bear witness to an intense battle between the Viking invaders and the valiant defenders led by Odo, Count of Paris. The fortifications stand tall against a backdrop of turbulent waters, symbolizing both protection and vulnerability. Intriguing details emerge from this historical scene: soldiers engaged in fierce combat with swords and shields; longships anchored along the riverbank; scaling ladders poised against fortified towers. These elements convey a sense of chaos and determination amidst a clash of cultures. After nearly a year-long siege, hope arrived when an army commanded by Charles the Fat intervened in October 886. This marked a turning point as peace was eventually brokered with the Vikings. Preserved through time in this engraving from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles (1882-1884), this print serves as a testament to both conflict and resilience. It offers us glimpses into an era defined by warfare, where geography played an essential role in shaping history.
