Villagers watch the hue and cry, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott
Villagers watch the hue and cry, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Villagers watch the hue and cry" captures a moment of intrigue and amusement in rural England during the late 18th century. Created by Randolph Caldecott in 1878, this particular print was published around 1918 as part of a collection inspired by William Cowper's comic ballad, "The Diverting History of John Gilpin". In this scene, we witness a group of curious villagers gathered together to observe an unfolding commotion. Their faces reveal a mixture of surprise, anticipation, and perhaps even mirth. The focal point is undoubtedly the protagonist himself - John Gilpin - who finds himself embroiled in an unexpected adventure after losing control of his horse on his way to Edmonton. Caldecott's skillful depiction transports us back to that era with its charming countryside setting and traditional English architecture. The monochrome palette adds depth to the image while emphasizing the timeless nature of this humorous tale. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded not only of the enduring popularity of Cowper's ballad but also how art has the power to transport us across centuries. This print serves as both a visual delight and historical artifact – capturing British humor at its finest while offering us insight into life during that period.
