EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 16th or 17th century oil painting, titled "The Virgin and Child with St Elizabeth and the Infant St John," is a masterpiece by the Italian artist Ippolito Scarsellino (also known as Ippolito Scarsella or Ippolito Scarsellino da Ferrara). The artwork depicts the Biblical scene of the meeting between the Virgin Mary and St Elizabeth, both pregnant with John the Baptist and Jesus respectively. The figures are beautifully rendered in rich colors and intricate detail, with Mary holding the infant Jesus in a loving embrace, while Elizabeth reaches out to touch her swollen belly. In the background, the young John the Baptist, dressed in camel's hair and holding a cross, looks on with curiosity and awe. This painting is a prime example of the Mannerist style, characterized by elongated figures and dramatic poses. It is believed to have been created during Scarsellino's time in Ferrara, Italy. The artwork has been exhibited in various galleries and museums throughout Europe, including the Nationalmuseum in Sweden, where it is currently housed. The painting is a testament to the enduring legacy of Christian art and the rich cultural heritage it represents. The figures in this painting are not only biblical characters, but also symbols of faith, motherhood, and the miraculous nature of the Incarnation. The painting invites us to contemplate the story of Christ's infancy and the role of St Elizabeth and St John in the larger narrative of the New Testament.
