The Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton: General Lord Clyde returning the salute of the... 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton: General Lord Clyde returning the salute of the troops as they marched past the grand stand, 1862. The inspection having been gone through, the General and his Staff crossed the valley, and, riding along the racecourse, took up a position immediately in front of the Grand Stand, to witness the marching past of the troops...The appearance of the Isle of Wight volunteers was...most creditable. They formed part of the second brigade, which in some mysterious way lost its proper position, and allowed the fourth brigade to precede it; they therefore brought up the rear of the entire army, which occupied exactly an hour and a quarter in passing before Lord Clyde'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton: General Lord Clyde returning the salute of the troops,' dates back to 1862. The image depicts General Lord Clyde, 1st Baron Clyde, a prominent figure in the British Army during the 19th century, as he returns the salute of the troops marching past the grand stand during a military exercise. The inspection of the troops had been completed, and Lord Clyde, along with his staff, moved to a position in front of the Grand Stand to witness the marching past of the army. The troops in this photograph are identified as the Isle of Wight volunteers, who were part of the second brigade. However, they inexplicably lost their proper position and ended up bringing up the rear of the entire army, which took exactly an hour and a quarter to pass before Lord Clyde. The scene is filled with a sense of pageantry and grandeur, as the soldiers, both horse and foot, execute their drills with precision and discipline. Lord Clyde, dressed in his military uniform, sits atop his horse, gesturing to the troops with a raised hand. The horses, too, display a sense of pride and readiness as they follow their riders. The photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News, is a testament to the spirit of camaraderie and dedication that defined the British military during this era. The image, with its intricate details and engraved texture, is a valuable historical document and an enduring work of art.
