The Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton: people on the Downs, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton: people on the Downs, 1862. Nothing could be finer than the approach of something like 12, 000 men in close column, at quick march, up the steep hill leading to the racecourse...The whole aspect of the field, as seen from the Grand Stand, was magnificent in the extreme...On each side, as far as the racecourse extended, was a dense body of spectators, which appeared to stretch away for miles...a few artillery troops could by the aid of a good glass be seen unlimbering two or three guns...the furthermost brigade [offered], in the bright scarlet uniform of two its battalions, a splendid contrast to the more sober tints of the grey and dark green uniforms of the rest of the brigade. Again, in the fourth brigade of the second division...was a broad streak of scarlet, caused by the uniforms of the 3rd City of London and the 32nd Middlesex, under Major Richards, so that the dark mass of compact troops was banded as it were at each end with a bright scarlet band, giving a most picturesque effect and finish to the whole. Behind the brigades were two lines of cavalry of the 18th Hussars, under Colonel Knox, in their gay uniform, supported by a small body of the 1st Hants Light Horse'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton: people on the Downs, 1862,' showcases an impressive gathering of military volunteers during a parade on the Brighton Downs. The exact creator of this image remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News in 1862. The scene is a breathtaking display of military might and community spirit, with an estimated 12,000 men marching towards the racecourse. The steep hill leading to the Grand Stand is adorned with soldiers in close columns, their determined expressions and smart uniforms creating a striking contrast against the rolling hills and clear blue sky. The spectators, numbering in the thousands, line the racecourse, creating a dense body of people that stretches as far as the eye can see. Artillery troops can be spotted unlimbering guns in the distance, adding to the sense of anticipation and excitement in the air. The brigades, each with their unique uniforms, add visual interest to the scene. The fourth brigade, for instance, is distinguished by a broad streak of scarlet caused by the uniforms of the 3rd City of London and the 32nd Middlesex regiments. The dark mass of troops is thus banded at each end with a bright scarlet band, creating a visually striking effect. Behind the brigades are two lines of cavalry from the 18th Hussars and the 1st Hants Light Horse, their gay uniforms adding a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic scene. The overall effect is one of grandeur, order, and unity, encapsulating the spirit of the Volunteer Field-Day at Brighton in 1862.
