The Volunteer Guards (32nd Middlesex), generally known as the Six-Foot Corps. 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Volunteer Guards (32nd Middlesex), generally known as the Six-Foot Corps. 1860. Undress, Private; Undress, Officer; Full Dress, Officer; Full Dress, Private; Undress, Private...the "Six-foot Volunteer Guards" was established last February, with a view to meet the requirements of men whose stature, being so much above the average height, render their appearance in the ranks of ordinary-sized corps somewhat awkward, and who might otherwise be disinclined to join actively in this movement of national defence. More than one hundred and fifty gentlemen of the required standard, including several military officers and six-footers from other corps, have been enrolled; and, notwithstanding that their size is exceptional, we have no doubt that the "Volunteer Guards" will have doubled its present effective strength by next season...We hear that auxiliary six-feet corps are forming in some of our provincial towns, Liverpool having taken the lead. They will have a truly British welcome whenever they may come up to headquarters in London'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1860, showcases The Volunteer Guards, also known as the Six-Foot Corps (32nd Middlesex). Established to cater to men of exceptional height, this corps aimed to address the awkwardness these individuals might experience in the ranks of ordinary-sized corps. With over 150 enrollees, including military officers and six-footers from other units, the Six-Foot Corps was poised to double its strength by the next season. The image captures the guards in various uniforms - undress for privates and officers, and full dress for both. The men, standing tall and proud, exude an air of confidence and camaraderie. Their height is evident, making them a unique addition to the volunteer forces of the time. The Six-Foot Corps was a response to the growing national defence movement and a testament to the inclusivity and adaptability of the volunteer forces. The corps' success led to the formation of auxiliary six-foot units in provincial towns, with Liverpool taking the lead. The Six-Foot Corps and its members were always welcomed warmly whenever they visited London, ensuring their presence was felt and appreciated in the broader military landscape. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of these extraordinary volunteers, whose height set them apart but did not deter them from serving their country.
