The Volunteer Review in Hyde Park, 1860. Creator: J. Palmer

The Volunteer Review in Hyde Park, [London], 1860. The volunteers were formed in a line of battalions, in contiguous columns at quarter distance, varying from 400 to 950 strong; four battalions forming a brigade, with the exception of the Artillery, which consisted of two battalions only. The whole mass or line was formed into two grand divisions, the first being the largest, embracing, in addition to four battalions (the strength of the second division), the Artillery Brigade, and the single battalion on the extreme right, composed of Mounted Rifles, the Hon. Artillery Company, Engineers, and Artists..."Quick march" being given, they moved forward, and when the last man of the front rank of each battalion had reached the first flagstaff...the order "Front, turn, " was given, when they moved forward at quarter-distance column, at right angles to the original line, in the direction of the second flag...on reaching which the orders were, "The column will wheel to the left, " "Left wheel, double, " and round went the column in "double-quick" time, when square "Forward, quick, " brought them parallel to the original time, marching in quick time, still at "quarter distance." From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Volunteer Review in Hyde Park, London, 1860' by J. Palmer, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing an impressive display of military formation and discipline. The scene captures a moment during the annual Volunteer Review, an event where thousands of volunteers gathered in Hyde Park to demonstrate their readiness for military service. The volunteers are arranged in a long line of battalions, forming columns at varying distances, with each battalion ranging from 400 to 950 strong. Four battalions make up a brigade, except for the Artillery Brigade, which consists of only two battalions. The entire mass of soldiers is divided into two grand divisions, with the first division being the larger one, including the Artillery Brigade, a single battalion of Mounted Rifles, the Hon. Artillery Company, Engineers, and Artists. As the command "quick march" echoes through the park, the volunteers spring into action. Once the last man of the front rank of each battalion reaches the first flagstaff, the order "front, turn" is given, and they pivot and march forward at right angles to the original line, towards the second flag. Upon reaching it, the order "The column will wheel to the left" is given, and the soldiers execute a sharp left turn, completing the maneuver in "double-quick" time. The final command, "forward, quick," brings them parallel to the original line, marching in quick time, still at "quarter distance." This photograph, originally published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1860, provides a fascinating look into the organization, discipline, and agility of the volunteer forces during this era. It is a testament to the dedication and commitment of these individuals to their military training and service.
