Walshs department store in Sheffield during its redevelopment, South Yorkshire, 1967
Completed Walshs department store redevelopment, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1967. The front of the store was demolished and rebuilt to accommodate the new road junction, which incorporated the hole in the road pedestrian walkway. The landmark junction unfortunately became the scene of numerous muggings and was redeveloped in the early 1990s to make way for Sheffields new tram system. Walshs became a House of Fraser store until the shop closed and the site was taken over by TH Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the transformation of Walshs department store during its redevelopment in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in 1967. The front of the store was demolished to make way for a new road junction that incorporated the iconic "hole in the road" pedestrian walkway. This landmark junction unfortunately became notorious for numerous muggings over time. The image showcases the architectural changes taking place as George Wimpey and Co. , a prominent construction company at the time, worked diligently on this ambitious project. The monochrome tones emphasize both the historical significance and timeless beauty of this moment. Walshs department store, once completed, stood proudly as an emporium within bustling Sheffield. It later transitioned into a House of Fraser store until its closure when TH Hughes took over the site. This photograph serves as a testament to not only Walshs' rich retailing history but also highlights how urban renewal shaped Sheffields landscape throughout the 20th century. It is worth noting that this image is part of Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. 's collection by Michael Walters, showcasing his exceptional talent in capturing significant moments in British architecture and culture during this era. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us remember its historical context while appreciating Sheffields continuous evolution through redevelopment projects like these.
