Water-Colour Gallery, 1860s, (1881). Creator: Unknown
Water-Colour Gallery, 1860s, (1881). Interior of a room containing a display of watercolour drawings in the South Kensington Museum in London. The design consisted of a series of bays, each surmounted by a lunette (semi-circular area) framed by a pair of pilasters painted to resemble marble, and supporting an acanthus-leaf corbel with a roof bracket above. The decor was designed by Richard Redgrave, first Keeper of Paintings at the Museum. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exquisite Water-Colour Gallery in the South Kensington Museum during the 1860s. The interior of this room is a testament to Victorian elegance and artistic appreciation. Designed by Richard Redgrave, the first Keeper of Paintings at the museum, every detail exudes sophistication. The gallery features a series of bays, each adorned with a semi-circular lunette framed by pilasters painted to resemble marble. These pilasters support an acanthus-leaf corbel with a roof bracket above, adding depth and grandeur to the space. The ceiling boasts a skylight that floods the room with natural light, illuminating the watercolour drawings on display. Visitors are treated to an enchanting visual feast as they explore this art centre. The carefully curated exhibition showcases an array of delicate watercolour paintings, capturing various subjects and styles from renowned artists of that era. This scene was captured in 1881 for "The South Kensington Museum" a book dedicated to engraved illustrations and descriptions of artworks housed within what is now known as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back in time to witness not only beautiful artwork but also appreciate Victorian interior design at its finest. This photograph serves as both a historical record and an inspiration for those who seek beauty through artistry and architectural splendor.
