Waterspout at New Galloway, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Waterspout at New Galloway, [Scotland], 1850. Unusual phenomenon during...a terrific thunder-storm...The foam rose to the height of fully 60 feet, boiling and hissing like a cauldron, and much more resembling dense volumes of smoke than anything to which we can compare it. This extraordinary foam ascended rapidly against the stream, which whizzed as though hot metal had been thrown into it...the upper part [of the column] separated itself from the foam, and ascended rapidly towards the north-east, coiling and extending itself like a snake among the clouds...A cart loaded with hay was drawn towards it, the poor terrified horse having apparently no power to resist; and the most strenuous exertions were necessary to withdraw the animal and its load from the fearful vortex, which in one instant more would have drawn them into the boiling river'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Waterspout at New Galloway, Scotland, 1850: An Unforgettable Encounter with Nature's Fury This image, captured in black and white during the Victorian era, depicts a breathtaking and terrifying waterspout that graced the skies above New Galloway, Scotland, in 1850. The scene unfolded during a violent thunderstorm, where the tranquil waters of the river were suddenly transformed into a tumultuous vortex of nature's raw power. The foamy white crests of the river rose to an astonishing height of sixty feet, creating a cauldron-like effect that boiled and hissed ominously. The upper part of the waterspout separated itself from the foam, extending itself like a sinuous snake among the clouds towards the north-east. A cart laden with hay was inexorably drawn towards the fearsome vortex, with the terrified horse seemingly unable to resist its pull. The most strenuous efforts were required to save both the animal and its precious cargo from being swallowed by the waterspout. This extraordinary event was immortalized in the pages of the Illustrated London News, which described the scene as an 'unusual phenomenon' that left an indelible impression on all who witnessed it. The newspaper reported that the waterspout's power was such that it whizzed the river water as though hot metal had been thrown into it. This evocative image transports us back in time to an era when the natural world held an undeniable allure and mystery, and serves as a reminder of the awe-inspiring power of the elements.
