Weber River - Entrance to Echo Canon, 1874. Creator: John Filmer

Weber River - Entrance to Echo Canon, 1874. Valley in Utah, USA. A short distance west from Wasatch Station...there lies before the traveller a view of the green valley before the entrance to Echo Canyon. Through it flows the Weber River, bordered with trees, and making a scene that is suddenly deprived of all the weirdness and look of dreary devastation that has marked the country through so many miles of this long journey. The valley is not so broad, so pastoral in aspect, as that which comes after the wild scenery of the first canon is passed; but it is like a woodland valley of home lying here in the wilderness. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
Weber River - Entrance to Echo Canon, 1874" is a captivating print that takes us back to the enchanting landscapes of 19th century America. The photograph, taken by John Filmer, showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Weber River as it flows through the entrance of Echo Canyon in Utah. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported to a scene that contrasts starkly with the rugged wilderness that preceded it on our journey. The valley before us is a verdant oasis, adorned with lush trees that line the banks of the Weber River. It is as if nature has conspired to create a woodland haven amidst an otherwise desolate terrain. The composition captures both the grandeur and tranquility of this hidden gem within Utah's vast landscape. The mountains in the background stand tall and majestic, forming a dramatic backdrop for this idyllic valley. We can almost feel ourselves standing at Wasatch Station, just moments away from immersing ourselves in this picturesque panorama. This print comes from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in 1874. It serves as a testament to not only Filmer's artistic prowess but also his ability to capture nature's splendor during an era when photography was still in its infancy. Through Filmer's lens, we are reminded of how even amidst untamed wildernesses there can be pockets of serenity waiting to be discovered—a reminder that beauty can be found where least expected.
