Wellington Monument, Wellington, Somerset, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Wellington Monument, Wellington, Somerset, 1854. Monument designed by Thomas Lee, to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. It is the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world. The Committee, after satisfying themselves of the stability of the old shaft (which had been struck by lightning), decided that the original shaft, which was triangular, and about 100 feet high, should be carefully repaired, where necessary; and be carried up about 50 feet higher, so as to bring it more to the proportions of an obelisk. The staircase is to be carried to the top, where there is to be an opening in each face, commanding a magnificent view of the surrounding country...The Committee...hope also to raise sufficient funds to place colossal granite lions on the basement...and to surround the whole by a sunk fence, or "ha-ha"'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the Wellington Monument in Wellington, Somerset, England, constructed in 1854. The monument, designed by Thomas Lee, stands as a tribute to the Duke of Wellington's triumphant victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The monument, which is the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, was initially a triangular shaft approximately 100 feet high. However, due to the old shaft being struck by lightning, a decision was made to repair and raise it about 50 feet higher to bring it closer to the proportions of a traditional obelisk. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, reveals the ongoing restoration efforts. The staircase was being carried up to the top, with openings planned for each face, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The committee also aimed to raise additional funds to place colossal granite lions on the basement and to surround the monument with a sunken fence or 'ha-ha.' The Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, was a prominent figure in 19th-century British history, known as the 'Iron Duke.' His military prowess and leadership during the Peninsular Wars and the Battle of Waterloo cemented his place in history. The monument in Wellington, Somerset, serves as a significant tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to pay homage to this legendary figure. This photograph, taken in black and white, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the restoration process of this iconic monument. The print, from the esteemed Illustrated London News archive, is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Duke of Wellington and the importance of preserving historical landmarks for future generations to enjoy.
