The Whittington Club - New Decoration of the Ball-Room, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Whittington Club - New Decoration of the Ball-Room, 1850. The Whittington in Arundel Street, London, formed in 1847, was also a literary institute. The splendid ball-room of this Institution has been re-decorated and refitted with great splendour, at a cost of £600, the entire amount having been subscribed by the members previous to the commencement of the works...In addition to the decorations, a new orchestra has been erected, which, supported by two graceful and appropriate fluted columns, is cleverly blended with the general character and style of the room, and forms a useful as well as a decorative feature. On Tuesday, the first monthly assembly of the season was held, Mr. Putnam's quadrille band occupying the orchestra; and the evening was spent in a manner highly satisfactory to those present'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Whittington Club - New Decoration of the Ball-Room, 1850,' showcases the recently renovated ballroom of The Whittington Club in London. Established in 1847, this institution was not only a social club but also a literary institute. The grand ballroom underwent a significant transformation, with members contributing £600 towards the cost of the new decorations before the renovation began. The room's interior is adorned with intricate designs and patterns, reflecting the Victorian era's elegance and sophistication. The addition of a new orchestra, supported by two elegant fluted columns, not only enhances the room's aesthetic appeal but also provides a functional feature for entertainment. The first monthly assembly of the season was held in this newly decorated ballroom, with Mr. Putnam's quadrille band performing in the orchestra. The evening was a resounding success, as evidenced by the smiling faces of the men and women in attendance. The room's gas lighting, a common feature of the era, adds to the warm and inviting atmosphere. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of Victorian-era social gatherings. The intricate details of the decorations, the elegant columns, and the joyful expressions on the faces of the attendees all contribute to the captivating allure of this historic image.
