EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1936, depicts a group of men and animals working together to excavate a new spillway for Tropic Dam in Garfield County, Utah. During the Great Depression, the Federal Government's Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI) employed Lange to document the effects of the economic crisis on rural communities. In this image, we witness the raw power of animal labor as horses and mules are used to move heavy boulders from the quarry to the dam site. The men, dressed in work clothes and wearing hats, use levers and sledges to maneuver the stones into place. The image captures the determination and resilience of the American people during a time of hardship, as they came together to make necessary adjustments to their land use and infrastructure. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the importance of community, cooperation, and resourcefulness in the face of adversity. Dorothea Lange's powerful imagery continues to inspire and inform our understanding of American history.
