EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, the wife of the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, on February 16, 1915. Taken by renowned photographer Arnold Genthe, the image was captured in a studio setting. Edith Bolling Wilson, who was born in Wytheville, Virginia, had been married to Norman Galt prior to her marriage to President Wilson in 1915. Edith Wilson served as the First Lady of the United States from 1915 until 1921, during her husband's second term in office. She was known for her graciousness, intelligence, and strong personality. During President Wilson's illness in 1919, Edith Wilson assumed many of the duties of the presidency, becoming the first and only woman to effectively serve as Acting President of the United States. This photograph, taken in the early 1900s, is a testament to the elegance and poise of Edith Wilson. She is dressed in a high-collared blouse and a flowing, ornate skirt, her hair styled in an intricate updo. The image is a glass negative, and the contrast between the light and dark areas is particularly striking. The portrait is a valuable addition to the Heritage Art collection at the Library of Congress, providing a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played a significant role in American history.
