Wisdom King of Great Awe-inspiring Power (Daiitoku myoo), mid-1800s. Creator: Unknown
Wisdom King of Great Awe-inspiring Power (Daiitoku myoo), mid-1800s. In Esoteric Buddhism, there is one Buddha at the center of the universe, and four additional Buddhas, each of whom occupies one of the four cardinal directions. These Buddhas also manifest themselves in fierce forms called Kings of Brightness (myoo), or Wisdom Kings. Daiitoku is an avatar of the Buddha Amida and manages the west. This dynamic representation of the deity, with his bull lunging through rough waves and his arms in position to wield his weapons, differs from many earlier Japanese paintings of the deity, which tend to portray him in a more sedentary fashion, standing on a bull or seated on a rock and with his arms in more stable poses

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Wisdom King of Great Awe-inspiring Power (Daiitoku myoo), a prominent figure in Esoteric Buddhism during the mid-1800s. The artist behind this masterpiece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to this already awe-inspiring depiction. In Esoteric Buddhism, there exists a central Buddha surrounded by four additional Buddhas, each occupying one of the cardinal directions. These Buddhas manifest themselves in fierce forms known as Kings of Brightness or Wisdom Kings. Daiitoku serves as an avatar for the Buddha Amida and governs over the western direction. What sets this dynamic representation apart from earlier Japanese paintings is its portrayal of movement and power. Here we see Daiitoku mounted on a bull, fearlessly lunging through rough waves. His arms are positioned to wield his weapons with great force and determination. The use of gold on silk adds richness and depth to this hanging scroll, emphasizing the deity's divine nature. This artwork belongs to the Edo period (1615-1868) and is currently housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Heritage Art has expertly captured every intricate detail in this photograph print, allowing viewers to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic brilliance. It serves as a testament to Japan's rich cultural heritage while offering a glimpse into the spiritual realm that inspired such remarkable creations.
