Wissahickon, near Paper-Mill Bridge, 1874. Creator: John Filmer
Wissahickon, near Paper-Mill Bridge, 1874. Wissahickon Creek, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. No notice of Philadelphia would be complete without some description of the Wissahickon. This very picturesque little river winds through a narrow valley, between steep and richly-wooded banks, and possesses all the wildness of a stream far from the haunts of men, though it is but a few miles from one of the largest cities on the continent. Its beauties begin from the moment it pours its crystal current into the waters of the Schuylkill. As it approaches the latter river, it is quiet and peaceful; but it soon becomes almost a mountain-torrent, as it is confined between narrow banks and overshadowed by towering hills. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Wissahickon, near Paper-Mill Bridge, 1874" by John Filmer transports us to the serene beauty of Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The image captures a moment in time when nature's splendor harmoniously coexists with urban surroundings. The Wissahickon Creek flows gracefully through a narrow valley, flanked by steep and lushly wooded banks. Its crystal-clear waters merge seamlessly with the Schuylkill River, creating a tranquil ambiance that belies its proximity to one of America's largest cities. As the creek meanders closer to the Schuylkill River, it undergoes a dramatic transformation. What was once calm and peaceful becomes an untamed mountain-torrent confined within narrow banks and overshadowed by towering hills. This juxtaposition between tranquility and wildness adds an element of enchantment to this already picturesque landscape. John Filmer skillfully captures these contrasting elements in his photograph, allowing viewers to appreciate both the natural wonders and man-made structures that define this unique location. His lens reveals not only the physical beauty but also evokes a sense of awe at how nature can flourish amidst human civilization. This remarkable print from 1874 serves as a timeless reminder of the enduring allure of Wissahickon Creek—a place where city dwellers can escape into nature's embrace without venturing far from their bustling metropolis.
