The Worcester Diocesan Training-School, at Saltley, near Birmingham, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Worcester Diocesan Training-School, at Saltley, near Birmingham, 1850....the Training School...consists of school-room, dining-room, class-rooms, masters dwellings, and every necessary apartment; on the first and second floors are dormitories for 60 students.... The scheme has much of a collegiate arrangement; but the architect has avoided the pretensions of such an establishment, and adapted a simpler style of architecture than is usually employed in the learned universities; considering it desirable to give the building a distinctive expression only, that might mark it as one united with many others to carry out an educational scheme peculiar to the present day...The design is by Mr. B. Ferrey, architect; and is in the style of domestic architecture of Edward III.'s time...The builders are Messrs. Winsland and Holland, of Duke-street, Bloomsbury'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases The Worcester Diocesan Training-School located at Saltley, near Birmingham, England. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the architectural beauty and educational significance of this esteemed institution. The Training School, as depicted, consists of a school-room, dining-room, class-rooms, masters' dwellings, and every necessary apartment. On the first and second floors are dormitories for 60 students. The scheme boasts a collegiate arrangement, yet the architect, B. Ferrey, has skillfully avoided the pretentiousness of a university, opting instead for a simpler style of architecture reminiscent of the domestic architecture of Edward III's time. This distinctive design marks the building as one united with others, carrying out an educational scheme unique to the present day. The design and construction of the building were overseen by Mr. B. Ferrey, architect, and Messrs. Winsland and Holland, builders, of Duke-street, Bloomsbury. The image captures the exterior of the building, with its intricate details and architectural elegance, standing proudly outdoors. The print, a testament to the rich educational history of Britain during the Victorian era, offers a captivating look into the past and the importance placed on education during this period.
