EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Yakut Clothing," is an exquisite illustration from the album "A journey across eastern Siberia: Part 1, Trip to Kamchatka," compiled by Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev in 1856. The image is a fascinating glimpse into the traditional attire of the Yakut people, an ethnic group residing in the cold climates of Siberia and the Russian Far East. Bulychev, a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, meticulously documented his expedition through this region, capturing the essence of the land and its inhabitants through 64 finely drawn illustrations. This particular illustration showcases a close-up view of a Yakut man's attire, which includes a colorful coat adorned with intricate designs, fur-trimmed boots, and a distinctive fur hat. The man also wears pants and undergarments, all essential for surviving the harsh climate. The illustration is a chromolithograph, a method of printing that uses multiple stones, each with a separate color. This technique allowed for the creation of detailed, vibrant images, as seen in the rich colors and textures of the Yakut's clothing. The image offers a glimpse into the heritage and history of the Yakut people, showcasing their unique fashion and the meeting of frontiers between the Russian and indigenous cultures. This image is a testament to the rich history and diverse cultures of Siberia and the Russian Far East during the 19th century. It is a valuable addition to any collection of historical illustrations, art, or ethnographic studies.
