EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning woodblock print, created by the renowned Japanese artist Gakutei (active circa 1820-1830), depicts the legendary Chinese figure Yang Guifei (712-756 AD), also known as the "Illustrious August Consort Yang," during the Tang Dynasty. The print, which dates from the 19th century, showcases the elegance and refinement of the Chinese imperial court. Yang Guifei is depicted in full length, wearing a richly colored and intricately patterned kimono. She is shown indoors, seated on a raised platform, with a building or pavilion in the background. In her hands, she holds a flute, her expression one of deep concentration as she listens to the music she plays. The print is a testament to the popularity of Chinese culture in Japan during this period, as well as the skill and artistry of the woodblock printmakers of the time. The print is a beautiful example of the gogaku style, which was popularized during the Edo period in Japan. It is characterized by its use of bold colors, intricate patterns, and detailed depictions of historical figures and scenes. The print is also a reflection of the influence of Chinese art on Japanese art during this time, as well as the enduring appeal of the story of Yang Guifei, who was famed for her beauty, musical talent, and tragic love story with Emperor Xuanzong. This print is a valuable addition to any collection of Asian art or art history, and is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of both China and Japan. It is currently housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it can be appreciated by visitors from around the world.
