York, in Western Australia, from an original sketch, 1857. Creator: Unknown
York, in Western Australia, from an original sketch, 1857. The oldest inland town in Western Australia. [It is...the chief settlement over the Darling Hills...[and one of] the principal corn-producing districts of the colony...York is pleasantly situated in the rich valley of the Avon, and thence the farms and stations extend still fifty miles further. The high land at the back of the town...is known as Mount Bakewell, or more familiarly as "old Bakewell; " the inhabitants...being justly proud of their handsome friend...Like most Australian rivers the Swan, or Avon as it is called at York, only runs in the winter, and sometimes not even then, being entirely dependent on the rain that falls in the winter months; but there are occasional reaches, or "pools" as they are termed, where the water remains fresh and sweet the whole year round, except in very severe droughts...when the pools become brackish'. EDITORS COMMENTS
York, Western Australia: A Glimpse into the Past, 1857 This image brings us back in time to York, the oldest inland town in Western Australia, as it looked in 1857. The sketch, created from an original drawing, showcases the charm and beauty of this historic settlement nestled in the rich valley of the Avon River. York holds a significant place in the history of Western Australia, serving as the chief settlement over the Darling Hills and one of the principal corn-producing districts of the colony. The town is pleasantly situated in the Avon Valley, with farms and stations extending fifty miles further. The high land at the back of the town, known as Mount Bakewell or 'old Bakewell,' is a source of great pride for its inhabitants. The Avon River, or Swan River as it is called at York, is a vital source of life in this arid land. Although it only runs in the winter months and sometimes not even then, the occasional reaches or 'pools' provide fresh and sweet water year-round, except during severe droughts when they become brackish. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the picturesque town and its surrounding landscape. The tranquil setting, with its lush greenery and clear water, stands in stark contrast to the harsh and unforgiving Australian terrain. The image captures the essence of York's early days, a time of growth, prosperity, and resilience in the face of nature's challenges. Today, York remains an essential part of Western Australia's history, attracting visitors from around the world who seek to learn about its rich past and appreciate its natural beauty.
