EDITORS COMMENTS
The Young Chavalier, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, c1730s. This portrait captures the essence of a man who was both a symbol of hope and a leader of rebellion. Known as Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Young Pretender, Charles Edward Stuart was the last serious contender to claim the British throne for the Stuart dynasty. Born into exiled royalty, Charles was raised as a Catholic and trained in warfare from an early age. His determination to restore his family's rightful place on the throne led him to lead the ill-fated Jacobite rebellion of 1745-1746. This print showcases Charles' regal presence with his royal sash adorned across his chest and wearing the prestigious Order of the Garter. The artist, A J Skrimshire, masterfully captures every detail of this young prince's face - his piercing eyes reflecting both strength and vulnerability. The backdrop hints at Scotland, highlighting Charles' deep connection to his homeland. It is said that he inspired fierce loyalty among his followers through his charismatic leadership and unwavering commitment to their cause. However, fate dealt him a cruel blow when defeat struck at Culloden in 1746. Forced into exile after this disastrous battle, Charles became an enduring figure in Scottish history - forever known as 'the Young Pretender. ' This powerful image serves as a reminder of one man's quest for power and glory amidst turbulent times.
